Worms Armageddon: Anniversary Edition – Review

The Worms franchise by Team17 has always been a personal favorite of ours, as it’s a series everyone can get into, and it’s especially great to play with friends. While there have been quite a few good Worms games during its 30-year lifespan, we have always loved Worms Armageddon in particular. This title has always offered us the most polished Worms experience, as nothing was more fun than beating our friends or AI opponents with our custom-made team of Worms. Now, with the Backworms Compatible Update for Worms Armageddon Anniversary Edition, we felt it was a great time to take a look at this classic gem. As Worms Armageddon has been reviewed plenty of times in the past, including when it was released on Steam slightly over a decade ago, we’ll mainly be looking at the relevancy of this new Anniversary Edition and how well Worms Armageddon has withstood the test of time. In this case, we can already state that the game still plays smoothly, and you can dive straight in with the different modes on offer. The game doesn’t bother with an actual storyline, and that’s just fine. The presentation is still top-notch, and for us, this was also the first Worms game that defined the iconic look for games in the series that were released after Armageddon. Early Worms titles looked a lot rougher around the edges and perhaps lacked a bit of the cutesy appeal that made the Worms characters loved all around the globe. Some items here have been revised to modernize the experience, but for the most part, you’ll be treated to the authentic Worms Armageddon experience. Recently, the Backworms Compatible Update went live for this nifty classic title. This update allows gamers to play Worms (Super NES), Worms (Genesis/Mega Drive), and Worms World Party (Game Boy Advance). These titles are fun for players who want to experience other classic Worms titles, and the great part is that this is a free update. You’re basically getting the opportunity to plow through even more Worms content, without having to buy individual titles. We do have to say that when you’ve already played several hours of Worms Armageddon Anniversary Edition, you’ll notice that these other titles are a bit rougher to play. Even so, it’s still very nice to have additional games added to an already amazing experience. Conclusion Worms Armageddon: Anniversary Edition is certainly the definitive way to play Worms Armageddon. We had a huge blast with this one, and the general gameplay loop remains just as entertaining as it was back in 1999. While it may hold little surprises in the form of new content after a few matches, it’s one of those titles that is great for every type of occasion, be it a gaming night with friends or family, or just if you want to get a few matches in against AI. We sadly didn’t find any players online during the few times we checked, which is a shame. The Backworms Compatible Update is the icing on the cake if you want to try out a few other classic titles from the franchise. If you’re looking for a great Worms title to spend quite a few hours on, this one is certainly worth picking up.
