Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing the perennial problem of flooding through the ongoing construction of underground rainwater bunkers across the state. The assurance was given by the Director General of the Delta State Bureau for Communications and Orientation, Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, during a live appearance on Quest Radio and Television’s flagship public affairs program, The Big Story, on Wednesday.Dr. Oghenesivbe stated that the governor is personally involved in monitoring the progress of the construction work, carrying out regular inspections to ensure that the projects are executed to specification. He noted that the initiative, which spans the three senatorial districts of the state, is designed to drastically reduce the impact of flooding triggered by thunderstorms and heavy rains. He explained that the Oborevwori-led administration is deploying high-tech engineering and modern equipment to build underground floodwater tunnels capable of evacuating large volumes of rainwater within minutes. The project, according to him, forms a critical part of the state’s long-term flood management strategy and is backed by multi-billion-naira investments.Oghenesivbe further revealed that the Delta State Flood Disaster Management Committee, chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, is working in collaboration with key stakeholders and relevant agencies at both state and federal levels to provide necessary support to flood victims across the state. He also praised the State Taskforce on Environment, led by Chief Godspower Asiuwhu, for its effective efforts since inception in maintaining environmental cleanliness and mitigating the effects of climate-related disasters. The Bureau Chief urged residents to support the government’s efforts by adopting responsible environmental practices. He advised the public to stop the indiscriminate dumping of refuse, clean their immediate surroundings and drainages, unplug electrical appliances during floods, and relocate valuables to higher ground to prevent damage.Dr. Oghenesivbe commended Governor Oborevwori for making adequate preparations to manage flood-related disasters, assuring the public that the government remains focused on safeguarding lives and property throughout the rainy season.
