BREAKING: Tinubu renames University of Maiduguri after late President Buhari

President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, in honour of the late President Muhammadu Buhari.The announcement was made on Thursday during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The event was organized to pay tribute to the late leader, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 82.“May we now adopt the University of Maiduguri as the Muhammadu Buhari University,” Tinubu declared, drawing applause from council members and dignitaries present.Paying glowing tribute to the former president, Tinubu described him as a man of integrity and discipline whose influence on Nigeria’s public life would be remembered for generations.“Though he was not without flaws—as no leader is—President Buhari stood out for his decency, honesty, and devotion to Nigeria,” Tinubu said. “His moral compass, his refusal to be swayed by power or praise, and his calm strength are traits that will be missed.”The President also praised Buhari’s legacy of service, recalling their shared political journey which led to the historic 2015 transition of power—the first time in Nigeria’s history that an opposition party unseated a ruling government through the ballot box.“We stood side by side in pursuit of a better Nigeria,” he recalled. “When he became president, he governed with restraint and humility, bearing the weight of leadership with grace.”Tinubu noted that even after leaving office, Buhari returned to his hometown in Daura, Katsina State, without seeking to manipulate or interfere in national affairs from behind the scenes.“He left power with the same simplicity he carried through life,” Tinubu said. “Even in death, he maintained the peace and dignity that defined his years.”Tinubu expressed gratitude to the inter-ministerial committee and Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State for organizing a befitting burial in less than 48 hours. He called the opportunity to lead the final procession in Daura a “deep honour.”Concluding his eulogy, the president offered a solemn prayer: “The People’s General, the Farmer President, your service is complete. May Allah forgive your shortcomings and grant you Aljannah Firdaus. Your legacy will continue to guide and inspire Nigerians for years to come.”
