The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has declared its full support for the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, amid growing concerns over a planned protest allegedly being organized by activist Omoyele Sowore. In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja and signed by the National Chairman of the PCRC, Alhaji Ibrahim Olaniyan, the committee dissociated itself from the proposed protest and condemned it “in its entirety,” describing it as a distraction and an ill-conceived attempt to undermine the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force and the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.“The proposed protest, under the guise of advocating for the welfare of retired police officers, is not only unnecessary but is perceived as one of Mr. Sowore’s many failed attempts to tarnish the image of the IGP and, by extension, the Federal Government,” the statement read. The PCRC, which functions as a liaison between the police and the public, emphasized that retired police officers are honorable and disciplined individuals who do not require external actors to express their concerns. “Our retirees have served with dignity and are well aware of the appropriate channels to communicate with the Police leadership,” the PCRC added.Highlighting key reforms under IGP Egbetokun’s leadership, the PCRC praised the ongoing transformation within the Force, which includes advancements in community policing, intelligence-led crime fighting, enhanced accountability, and improved personnel welfare. The committee listed several areas where the IGP’s leadership has been particularly commendable:Commitment to the rule of law and human rights;Reforms focused on transparency and police accountability;Strengthened collaboration with other security agencies and community stakeholders;Strategic deployment of personnel and resources to combat insecurity nationwide; An open-door policy that promotes engagement with civil society organizations. At a time when the nation faces pressing security challenges, the PCRC called on citizens, civil society organizations, and public institutions to support the Nigeria Police Force rather than politicize its efforts.“We urge the IGP to remain focused and not be distracted by agents of division and misinformation. Nigerians recognize authentic leadership and sincere reforms,” the PCRC stated. The committee reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Police to foster trust, strengthen public confidence, and contribute to peace and security across all communities in Nigeria.“Together, we will build a safer, more united Nigeria,” the statement concluded.www.twitter.com/spyetv
