Five Dead, Several Injured in Tragic Crash Along Nnewi–Okigwe Road

A tragic road crash that occurred on the night of Friday, July 25, 2025, along the Nnewi–Okigwe Road by Amichi has claimed five lives, including three children. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), through Margaret B. OnabeSector Public Education OfficerFRSC Anambra State Command, ten persons were involved in the fatal accident, which occurred at approximately 9:39 p.m. and was reportedly caused by brake failure. The crash involved a Mercedes-Benz truck (registration number NNE 893 ZG) which lost control at high speed and collided with a Honda motorcycle, a Qlink motorcycle, and several pedestrians. The deceased include two adult males, one male child, and two female children. Five others—comprising adults and children—sustained varying degrees of injury.Emergency responders from the FRSC Nnewi Unit Command arrived at the scene within 31 minutes of receiving the distress call. The rescue team promptly managed traffic, evacuated the injured, and initiated hospital follow-ups.At Anglican Diocesan Hospital, Amichi, six crash victims were admitted. According to medical personnel, three were dead on arrival, one later died from injuries, while two survivors are currently undergoing treatment. Meanwhile, Pat Angelina Hospital confirmed one fatality and is treating three others for bruises and bone injuries.The FRSC Sector Commander, who flew in from Abuja to Enugu early Saturday morning, proceeded directly to the crash site. There, she supervised vehicle recovery operations alongside the FRSC towing team, and was received by local dignitaries including Mayor of Nnewi South, Hon. George Ezeogidi, House of Representatives Member Hon. Nomso Atuchukwu, and Vice President General of Amichi, Hon. Emmanuel Nzubechukwu.Following her assessment at the scene, the Sector Commander visited the hospitals in Amichi where crash victims were being treated—including Pat Angelina Hospital, Afube Civil Center, and the College of Nursing Science. She expressed her condolences to the families of the deceased and offered words of encouragement to the injured.In her remarks, the Commander emphasized the critical importance of roadworthiness, driver responsibility, and public sensitization on traffic regulations. She urged the local leadership to collaborate with the FRSC on organizing community town hall meetings focused on road safety education for drivers and road users in the area.“This tragedy is a painful reminder of the dangers of neglecting vehicle maintenance and disregarding traffic rules,” she stated. “We call on all motorists to be vigilant, responsible, and safety-conscious to avoid needless loss of lives.”The FRSC Nnewi Unit Command has assured the public of continuous monitoring of the situation and pledged to release updates as further information emerges.Members of the public are encouraged to report emergencies using the FRSC toll-free number 122 or via the FRSC Mobile App, which offers safety alerts, emergency assistance, and traffic updates.
