Oppo Find N5 Review – 5 Star Flip Phone

One day, the Oppo Find N5 has been launched today. Don’t rub your eyes because you are really good at counting. This year’s model is the N5 not the N4 because the number four is not a number that has a positive connotation in the East Asian country. In fact, last year Oppo didn’t launch the Find N flip phone like their other competitors. After a year of rest and skipping a number, the Find N5 is launched and it is a five-star foldable device because it offers the desired improvements and various interesting additional features.SPECIFICATIONSOppo Find N5External Screen – 6.62″ OLED LTPO 120HzIn – 8.12″ OLED LTPO 120HzDolby VisionQualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite 7 Core (3nm) processor2x Oryon V2 Phoenix L 4.32 GHz chips5x Oryon V2 Phoenix M 3.53 GHzAdreno 830 Graphics ChipRAM 16GB LPDDR5XInternal Storage 512 GB UFS 4.0Primary Camera 50MP, f/1.89, OIS (Wide Angle)8MP, f/2.2 (Ultra Wide Angle)50MP, f/2.7, OIS (Telephoto)Hasselblad camerasExternal Selfie Camera – 8MP f/2.4Inside – 8MP f/2.45600 mAh batterySuperVOOC wired charging 80WWireless charging AirVOOC 50WNano SIM/Telephony/5GNFC YesAudio jack NoneWaterproof IPX9Scanning System Side fingerprint scannerSelling price RM 7999 (16/512GB)SCREENThe outer screen is now larger and wider at 6.6″ AMOLED LTPO 120Hz and Dolby Vision. On the Find N3 it is only 6.3″ which makes fans of larger devices complain. It still has the same ratio as a regular candybar screen which gives it an advantage over the Z Fold6. Therefore, during the review period I rarely felt the need to open the inner screen. This was only done when I wanted to watch YouTube or read my e-book via Play Books. The inner screen is 8.12″ AMOLED LTPO 120Hz also with Dolby Vision. Again, this inner screen is larger than the previous 7.82″. The effect of the screen folding on the Find N5 can still be seen at certain angles. It is however more difficult to see compared to the crease effect on the Z Fold6 and Mate XT Ultimate. Maybe it's time we accept the fact that crease effect cannot be eliminated 100%, it can only be reduced. In my opinion, the outer screen looks clearer under bright sunlight. This may be because there is a layer of glass instead of just a layer of plastic. Both screens also have no issues displaying Dolby Vision content through the Apple TV and Netflix apps. Another thing I would like to praise is the haptic system which feels more natural. It is similar to the system used on the Find X8 which I feel is the best on an Android device so far.BIOMETRICSThe biometric system is in the form of a fingerprint scanner built into the power button on the right side and a facial scan. The side fingerprint scanner is fast but with the device now taller, its position is not as ergonomic as the Find N3. I have gotten used to the position of the Find N3, Z Fold6 and Magic V3 scanners which are located lower. This may be one of the few shortcomings when compared to the previous model. Therefore, I prefer to use the facial scanning system which is also fast but not very responsive in dark surrounding situations.DESIGNWith a 6.6″ external screen, the design is almost the same as the Find X8. Let me once again use the Find X8s as a reference device because it is strong proof that Oppo should now be seen as a solid device manufacturer. Despite the almost identical design, the Find N5 is only a few millimeters thicker while it is a foldable screen device. It is much thinner when compared to the Z Fold6. The body is so thin that it is only slightly thicker than the USB-C charging port. This is what would happen if the Z Fold6 was given Ozempic! This gives the device the advantage of feeling like a regular smartphone and also not feeling that heavy which is synonymous with other foldable screen devices on the market. The process of opening and closing the screen is easy. There are no strange sounds on the hinges and the device feels sturdy even in the open position. The hump on the back is also lower so the device does not feel as heavy at the top. The model reviewed has a marble-like back finish which makes it look very premium. Oppo has given the device a vegan leather frame that makes it look more exclusive without adding to the overall thickness of the device. There are volume rocker and power buttons (which double as a fingerprint scanner) on the right side. Also located on the same side, just on the left side of the device, is a slider for setting the device to ring, vibrate or mute. This may be the last time this slider is used as there are already rumors that it will be replaced by a camera control button starting next year. The thin body means that the Find N5 is now only equipped with a pair of stereo speakers and not three like the Find N3. Both speakers are placed on the “left window” of the screen with them shooting to the side. However, Oppo is not shy about including an infrared emitter at the top. Finally, the device passes the IPX9 waterproof standard which is a big change because the Find N3 did not pass any standards at all.Oppo Find N5 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6USAGE AND SOFTWAREThe ColorOS 15 operating system based on Android 15 is used and it offers the smoothest user experience I have ever enjoyed on a foldable device. Oppo confirmed that the FInd N5 will receive 5 versions of Android and 6 years of security patches. The extraordinary smoothness of the Find X8 has been transferred to the Find N5 despite using a different processor chip. Opening applications is fast with support for up to three applications to be launched simultaneously on the screen. Installing applications is lightning fast because it supports 5G, WiFi 7 and fast UFS 4.0 storage.Among the most interesting features of the Find N3 is that up to three applications can be launched simultaneously without any issues. The Find N5 continues this capability with the help of a more powerful processor chip with 16GB RAM memory that can be expanded to 28GB through the RAM Expansion feature. The taskbar can be activated all the time at the bottom of the screen to speed up the process of switching applications. ColorOS 15 provides the option to place the taskbar all the time at the bottom or floating. However, I don't like that only 4 quick application shortcuts and 3 open applications will be displayed on the taskbar. On the Z Fold6, up to 7 quick application shortcuts and up to 4 open applications can be displayed. There is a Boundless View feature that allows three applications to be launched simultaneously as if on a screen after 15″. Unlike Samsung's tri-window system, Boundless View allows the three applications to be launched in full screen size when needed and reduced when not needed.Three applications can also be arranged with two above and one below in full screen mode. With Boundless View, the issue of narrow/small application display does not occur. Users can combine three favorite apps into Boundless View mode at any time and they will be saved in a special icon on the app's home screen. There is also a FlexForm Mode feature that divides the device into two screens when placed in an L-shape. In YouTube and Netflix for example, the top screen will display video content and the bottom screen will display the video control interface. In the app, the top screen displays the viewfinder and the bottom screen displays various camera controls.Because we are now in the era of artificial intelligence (AI), it is not valid if the device is not offered with several features that use it. There is the ability to transcribe phone calls which are then formulated by AI. Translate mode also translates conversations in real time in several selected languages. Pictures can also be edited to turn them into superheroes, cartoons or works of art. Basic editing to remove objects or blemishes also now also uses AI developed by Oppo. The most interesting and unexpected feature is the integration of the Apple ecosystem on an Android device. The FInd N5 can easily transfer files to a macOS computer. The O+ Connect app is used by it working like Link to Windows. The phone's content can be read and transferred to my MacBook as fast as AirDrop. More interestingly, sending files from the phone to the MacBook is also possible. The killer feature is that I can turn the Find N5 into a MacBook. I can control the MacBook from the Find N5 with relatively low latency. There is support for all Trackpad gestures and also the full macOS keyboard. But there are a few issues. First of all, O+ Connect is currently still in Beta testing and is not very stable. The connection can be randomly disconnected and there are also situations where it fails to connect. Second, O+ Connect requires access to many macOS systems to work. The feature of accessing the MacBook from the iPhone itself is not provided by Apple. How much do you trust the security of your Mac computer in the hands of Oppo software?BENCHMARKSHere are the scores recorded in the Geekbench 6, Geekbench AI, Antutu 3D and 3D Mark Wildlife Extreme benchmark tests. The Oppo Find N5 is the world's first foldable screen device using the Snapdragon 8 Elite with 7 CPU cores compared to 8 cores on the other 8 Elite. Therefore, I put a performance comparison of this chip with the chips below.Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy – Samsung Galaxy S25 UltraDimensity 9400 – Oppo Find X8 ProApple A18 Pro – Apple iPhone 16 Pro MaxApple A17 Pro – Apple iPhone 15 Pro MaxSnapdragon 8 Gen 3 – Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6AnTuTu 3DChip ScoreSnapdragon 8 Elite 7 Core 2,157,718Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy 1,946,864Dimensity 9400 2,629,017Apple A18 Pro 1,720,751Apple A17 Pro 1,542,050Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 1,016,712Geekbench 6Single Core Multi Core ChipSnapdragon 8 Elite 7 Core 2866 7987Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy 2957 9435Dimensity 9400 2663 8959Apple A18 Pro 3359 8129Apple A17 pro 2793 6925Sanpdragon 8 Gen 3 1902 6943Geekbench AIChip Single Accuracy Score Half Accuracy Score Quantized ScoreSnapdragon 8 Elite 7 Core 2206 2187 3710Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy 2727 2703 4580Dimensity 9400 1728 1740 2147Apple A18 Pro 3975 7744 6204Apple A17 Pro 3705 6515 5696Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 2543 2017 38673DMark Wildlife ExtremeChip ScoreSnapdragon 8 Elite 7 Core 5507Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy 6135Dimensity 9400 6251Apple A18 Pro 4560Apple A17 Pro 3746Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 4752The performance difference between the 8 Elite and the 8 Elite with 7 cores is between 5-15% depending on the benchmarking application used. However, I must say that I could not feel this difference while using the Find N5 and S25 Ultra. Both these Android flagship devices offer a comparable user experience. The performance of the device is also comparable to other devices equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. There are no heating issues, can be played at the highest graphics settings and at the highest frame rates. Games like COD Mobile, COD Warzone Mobile, PUBG and Asphalt 9 are no problem to play. Oppo itself says that the Find N5 can run the game for up to 7 hours continuously. I did not have time to test it myself but long gaming sessions did not cause the device to generate heat that was uncomfortable to hold.CAMERAHere are some samples of photos taken using the Find N5 during the week I reviewed it. Overall, the photos taken using the wide-angle and telephoto lenses are very satisfactory in any situation. The photos from the ultra-wide-angle lens look softer and are not as sharp due to the small sensor size. This is especially noticeable at night because the Find N5's ultra-wide-angle lens is not equipped with OIS.BATTERYThe 5600 mAh battery used is very large for such a thin device. It is larger than the batteries of the iPhone 16 Pro Max (4685 mAh) and the Galaxy S25 Ultra (5000 mAh). The device consistently lasted throughout moderate use throughout the review period. SOT was between 11-12 hours. This is personally the longest-lasting foldable phone I have ever reviewed. With the 80W charger included in the box, the device can be recharged in around 50 minutes. 50W wireless charging support is also included.AUDIOThe two side-firing speakers manage to produce balanced audio but overall the Find N5's audio is the device's Achilles heel. The sound produced feels flat and lifeless even at high settings. There's no dimension to the audio output with the bass feeling cardboard-like and the high-frequency audio drowned out.Due to the thin body, the audio chamber for the speaker doesn't have a large amplitude to produce lively audio. There is spatial audio support but all the special effects promised are inaudible. There's no Dolby Atmos system included with Oppo opting to use its own audio system. It's better to use the Find N5 with a pair of headphones or TWS.IN THE BOXHere's what's included in the box.1x Oppo Find N5.1x USB-A to USB-C charging cable.1x 80W SuperVOOC charger.1x SIM pin.1x Frame set.CONCLUSIONThe Oppo Find N5 is a five-star foldable that not only solves some of the issues I had with the Find N3 but also solves issues that exist in all other foldables from other manufacturers. Super smooth software, true flagship performance, amazing camera capabilities, an increasingly thin body and a long-lasting battery with fast charging. The issues of foldables that have many shortcomings compared to regular candybar devices are addressed brilliantly by the Find N5.There are still shortcomings such as the absolutely lifeless speakers and the premium selling price that puts it out of reach for most users. But this is what happens when you want to be the thinnest and the flagship at the same time.In Malaysia, the Oppo Find N5 is priced at RM7999, which is quite high but still competitive compared to its competitors, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 (RM7899) and Honor Magic V3 (RM6999) which are equipped with last year's chip.ProsSpecifications.Extremely smooth ColorOS 15 performance.Thinner design with an invisible screen folding effect.Fast charging and long-lasting battery.Apple ecosystem integration.Good camera capabilities.IPX9 waterproof.ConsSpeaker performance is less than satisfactory. No Dolby Atmos.Support for 5 versions of Android and 6 security patches only.
