Sarawak Premier, Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Dr. Haji Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Haji Abang Openg (Abang Johari) recently announced that the Sarawak government will introduce a training programme on the use of artificial intelligence technology for teachers in the state. He said that the government has agreed to establish this training programme because there is a large demand from teachers. The programmes to be introduced will be specifically designed to help these teachers become more efficient in their jobs.Details of the AI training programme have not been revealed yet, but knowledge of using AI technology will help teachers to incorporate the technology into their education syllabus, and teach students how to use AI technology correctly and prudently.Abang Johari said that AI technology will be used in various industrial sectors in Sarawak in the future, including agriculture, manufacturing and social, and this is one of the best steps for children to learn the best ethics in using the technology. To give an example of a knife, a good way to use a knife is as a tool in the kitchen to cut food, but this tool can also cause harm if used for the wrong purpose.Such teacher training programs have already begun. Last week, 80 primary and secondary school teachers attended a training program on programming and using AI at Curtin University Malaysia in Miri, Sarawak organized by the IEEE Curtin University Malaysia student body and non-profit organization Chumbaka Miri. The program, which ran for four days about two weeks ago, exposed these teachers to AI technology that can be used to benefit teaching in the classroom, as well as new knowledge for students in school. The hope is that with such programs, both teachers and students can leverage this new technology to further develop general knowledge and technology, and various new ways of learning can be demonstrated for the benefit of all.
