OpenAI Offers Free GPT Model Optimized for Laptops
After being promised for a long time, OpenAI is now presenting an artificial intelligence model that is offered for free, called GPT-OSS. Two variations are offered, the first model with 120 billion parameters that is said to be equivalent to the previous o4-mini offering. In addition, the second model offered comes with 20 billion parameters that is said to be equivalent to o3-mini.Both of these offering models are updates to their open model, after GPT-2 was offered about five years ago. OpenAI says this model offers good performance when compared to other open models.OpenAI says they trained this model mostly using English-language datasets, and it focuses on STEM, programming and general knowledge. This model comes with a text-only mode, rather than multi-modal like the ChatGPT offering.This open GPT-OSS model is offered for free through Hugging Face. In addition, interested users can also run it on a computer through programs such as Ollama and LMStudio. Several cloud providers have also offered it including Amazon and Microsoft.Comment
