The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced that more than 500,000 online content that violated the law was taken down between 1 January 2022 and 1 August 2025.This was shared by the Minister of Communications, YB Teo Nie Ching, who also detailed the full statistics related to the action. Of the total, 321,012 pieces of content involved gambling activities, 119,273 related to fraud, 43,585 with obscene elements, 35,420 cases of bullying or sexual harassment and 38,818 fake content.According to him, this action was taken at the request of MCMC because it violated the provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and other relevant laws including guidelines set by platform providers.MCMC also expressed its commitment to improve the efficiency of monitoring harmful content, especially online, through close collaboration with enforcement agencies such as the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM). This collaboration includes technical assistance including the provision of information and forensic analysis to facilitate investigations by authorities. As an additional step, MCMC has developed the portal sebuah.my as a fact-checking platform, and launched a Chatbot based on AI technology to assist in quickly checking information. In addition, licensing has been made mandatory for relevant parties under Act 588 starting 1 January 2025 as a step to strengthen control over digital content in Malaysia.
