Malaysia Lost RM1.22 Billion Due to Cybercrime in 2024

Inspector General of Police, Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail revealed that Malaysia suffered losses exceeding RM1.22 billion due to cybercrime between January and October 2024.He explained that the total losses involved various forms of cybercrime including financial fraud, online fraud, identity manipulation and illegal data leakage. He also informed that Cybersecurity Malaysia had recorded 5,900 cyber incidents throughout 2023 with 3,705 of them involving fraud cases. The report also showed a sharp increase in data breach cases of 1,100% compared to the previous year. These statistics clearly show that cybercrime is no longer a peripheral issue, but has become a major threat to the country's economic security. To tackle cybercrime, PDRM is strengthening digital forensic capabilities, increasing intelligence and expanding cooperation with local and international agencies.PDRM also uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology in administrative and operational matters to speed up work processes and reduce manpower requirements.
