Vulnerable House Republican won't seek re-election: report

A centrist Republican who has a history of pushing back on President Donald Trump won't seek re-election, and may have opened the door for Democrats, according to a report.Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) plans to retire at the end of his term, two people familiar with his plans told Politico on Friday night. Bacon represents Nebraska's 2nd congressional district, a swing district that voted for Joe Biden in 2020 and Kamala Harris in 2024. Bacon has publicly broken with Trump on major issues such as foreign policy, trade, and the handling of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection. Bacon voted to certify the 2020 election results and has called himself a "Reagan Republican." He's also a member of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus.Bacon was among House lawmakers most vulnerable to losing their seats in next year's midterms. He was targeted by a new ad that aired earlier this month as part of a nationwide campaign to draw attention and outrage to the GOP plan to boot millions off Medicaid.Bacon has been a thorn in Trump's side. In March, he urged the president to resist capitulating to Russian President Vladimir Putin — and he delivered a history lesson in an attempt to persuade him.Bacon isn't alone in nixing another campaign, with other lawmakers making similar recent announcements.Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) announced in April he would retire at the end of his current term and not seek re-election. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) also said in May she would not seek re-election next year.
