Public Health: Whooping cough is back

It often begins like so many other illnesses tickle in the throat, a runny nose, maybe a low-grade fever. Parents may dismiss it as a mild cold, coworkers shrug it off as allergies, and teens barely notice it at all. But a few days later, the cough starts. And it’s not a normal cough. Within one to two weeks, the cough becomes more intense — harsh, violent fits that leave you gasping for air. Sometimes, a high-pitched “whoop” escapes as you finally manage to inhale. These coughing fits tend to worsen at night and are often accompanied by vomiting. In between episodes, the person may seem fine, even healthy. But the fits return — again and again.
