By Stefano Porciello (EurActiv) -- The United States bombed key Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan, Donald Trump announced last night, after mounting speculation about whether America would step into the ongoing war between Israel and Iran. “Our objective was the destruction of Iran's nuclear enrichment capacity and a stop to the nuclear threat posed by the world's number one state sponsor of terror,” Trump said in an address to the nation. The bombing was a “spectacular military success” and the facilities have been “completely and totally obliterated," Trump said. “Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace. If they do not, future attacks will be far greater and a lot easier,” Trump said. He accused Iran of four decades of hatred against Israel and the US and thanked the Israeli military “for the wonderful job they've done”. He also thanked Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: “We worked as a team like perhaps no team has ever worked before. And we've gone a long way to erasing this horrible threat to Israel,” Trump said. Netanyahu warmly thanked Trump on X, stating that the US bombing took place “in full coordination” with the Israeli military. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the US of violating the United Nations charter, international law and the treaty on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. He said that the bombings were “outrageous and will have everlasting consequences,” adding that “each and every member of the UN must be alarmed over this extremely dangerous, lawless and criminal behavior.” “Iran reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, interest, and people,” he added. The International Atomic Energy Agency said that “no increase in off-site radiation levels has been reported” as of 7 a.m. Brussels time and that it will further assess the situation when more information becomes available.
