Israel bombs Damascus, stoking conflict with Syria’s new government

DAMASCUS, Syria - Israel carried out what it said were “dozens” of strikes Wednesday across Syria, including in the capital, escalating a conflict with a new Syrian government that is already grappling with a deadly episode of domestic, sectarian unrest. Israel tied Wednesday’s strikes, and others it carried out earlier in the week, to Syria’s internal conflict, saying it was attacking government forces to protect the Druze minority from Syria’s Islamist leadership. The Trump administration - which has tried to ease Syria’s isolation following the toppling of former dictator Bashar al-Assad last year, including by easing sanctions - did not publicly call for Israel to halt its attacks....
