‘Reading Nature’ explores important pieces of nature writing

Earth Day is every day. This was brought home to me as I read “Reading Nature,” by John Seibert Farnsworth. (MSU Press, 2025) Its subtitle, “The Evolution of American Nature Writing,” gives the theme of this inspiring and informative survey, with each of its 10 chapters discussing, in chronological order, an important piece of nature writing. Farnsworth begins, as one might expect, with a review of Thoreau’s 1854 “Walden.” I’m always moved by this seminal work showcasing how a relationship with the natural world is essential for both individual and societal well-being.
