Long-term health risks of flooding must be addressed

WITH the northern and most populous part of the Philippines still recovering from last month’s severe flooding, and the state weather bureau already forecasting that August will be the “wettest” month of the year with two to three new storms expected, new research from the US published this week should raise serious concerns here in our flood-prone land. The research has shown that higher mortality risk for people, especially senior citizens, living in areas that have flooded can persist for years after the event, even if it is not repeated. This should be a wake-up call to disaster planners to look well beyond immediate relief and recovery. The research...
