'Death knell': University 'devastated' as Trump yanks $584M

President Donald Trump has turned his attention to another institution of higher learning: UCLA. Trump on Wednesday halted $584 million in research funding aimed at developing "life-saving" cures, The Guardian reported.“If these funds remain suspended, it will be devastating for UCLA and for Americans across the nation,” said the school’s chancellor, Julio Frenk.“It is a loss for Americans across the nation whose work, health, and future depend on the groundbreaking work we do," he added. At issue is Trump's allegations of "civil rights violations related to antisemitism and affirmative action," said the report.So far, Harvard University, Brown University, and Columbia University have all caved into Trump's demands. New UC president, James B. Milliken, claims, “These cuts do nothing to address antisemitism. Moreover, the extensive work that UCLA and the entire University of California have taken to combat antisemitism has apparently been ignored.”The “cuts would be a death knell for innovative work that saves lives, grows our economy and fortifies our national security. It is in our country’s best interest that funding be restored," he added. The attack comes from Trump's success with Columbia University, which agreed to pay $200 million to stop investigations into allegations that the school violated anti-discrimination laws. UCLA has already settled another lawsuit from students and a teacher who were blocked from classes by pro-Palestinian protesters in 2024.
