Reaction was swift Thursday evening, with progressives calling out right-wing accounts on social media after a new Wall Street Journal report revealed former President Bill Clinton was among dozens of powerful names who sent letters to the deceased sex trafficker and financier Jeffrey Epstein.Ghislaine Maxwell organized a leather-bound birthday album for Epstein’s 50th birthday in 2003, years before he was convicted of sex crimes, the Journal reported. The album included letters from prominent figures, who were labeled in the book’s table of contents as “friends.” In addition to Clinton, other notable names included Donald Trump, then a private citizen and businessman, and Wall Street billionaire Leon Black. Fashion designer Vera Wang and media owner Mort Zuckerman were also included in the book. The revelations reverberated across social media.Charlotte Clymer, an LGBTQ+ activist and public commentator, noted that MAGA accounts were pouncing on the Clinton news after blasting the Journal's previous reporting on Trump's involvement as fake. She made it clear she's a proud Democrat and doesn't care if Clinton, former Presidents Barack Obama or Joe Biden are in the files — she wants them exposed."I don't care if any Democrat is in the Epstein files," she said in a video posted on X. "And you want to know why? Because I'm not in a cult. Because no pedophile should ever feel safe in this country."In a follow-up post, she declared, "I don't give a s--- who's in it. Expose them all."MSNBC anchor Chris Hayes wrote on X, "So this is probably fake too, right @JDVance ? The whole thing made up? Or maybe just the Trump part? I’m losing the thread a little, I gotta say."Bloomberg columnist Matthew Yglesias wrote sarcastically on X, "Hard to believe Bill Clinton would be mixed up with any inappropriate conduct." He added, "I just don’t find it credible. The man’s been around a long time and we would have heard if he was mixed up in anything."Journalist Michael Tracey added, "So now we're supposed to believe that the WSJ is also fabricating an Epstein birthday letter from Bill Clinton? Because if Trump's angry denials and the lawsuit he filed last week are to be believed, WSJ made the whole thing up to defame Trump. Are they now defaming Clinton too?"Activist Amy Siskind chimed in, "They should all be publicly shamed and face consequences! ALL of them. Black has been disgraced already. Name them all."MAGA accounts predictably widely shared the article, with right-wing journalist Nick Sortor writing on X, "BREAKING: Bill Clinton wrote a disturbing birthday letter to Jeffrey Epstein, WSJ claims Clinton REFUSED to deny its legitimacy when asked for comment," he wrote, later adding: "Clinton spent an awful lot of time with Jeffrey Epstein, so this revelation makes sense. Two peas in a pod."
