Last week, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins announced that the USDA had entered the next phase of its plan to rescind its 2001 Roadless Rule, beginning a public comment period that will last until Sept. 19. The rule establishes areas of the National Forest System managed according to regulations that generally limit timber harvesting and road building. Its rescission would open some 45 million acres spread across 36 states to timber harvest and road-building projects.
