Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday warned Florida lawmakers to steer clear of any efforts to oppose his sweeping legislative priorities on illegal immigration when the state’s special session begins next week – or face political payback. “It would be very, very hazardous politically,” DeSantis said if legislators return to the Capitol only to quickly adjourn without taking the immediate action he wants, Politico reported. The Florida governor wants lawmakers to fast track his MAGA agenda now that President Donald Trump has returned to the White House and his immigration executive orders are becoming a reality. But it’s not yet clear that all will go smoothly in the Sunshine State, which also happens to be the president’s official state of residence and where his Mar-a-Lago golf resort sits.ALSO READ: Inside the parade of right-wing world leaders flocking to D.C. for Trump's inauguration“The governor ordered lawmakers back to town, but so far there are no signs that the GOP-controlled Legislature will actually take any action during the five-day session,” according to Politico. Among the list of proposals DeSantis has advocated for include requiring “maximum participation” with law enforcement when it comes to the deportation of undocumented immigrants, and suspending local officials who refuse to comply.“He also wants to establish criminal penalties for ‘illegal entry’ in the state; appoint a state immigration enforcement officer to coordinate with federal authorities and expand a migrant transport program that DeSantis used to transport migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard,” Politico said.DeSantis also wants the green light to drive migrants from Florida to other countries instead of sending them to other states, and to repeal a law that extended in-state tuition rates to children of undocumented migrants.
