Victims' families and survivors lit candles and placed special symbols on Sunday (September 1) beneath photographs of students, teachers and parents who were killed 20 years ago, when Islamist gunmen launched the deadliest militant attack in Russia's modern history. At least 32 attackers – linked to a separatist insurgency in neighbouring Chechnya – took over the school in the small town of Beslan on the first day of school on September 1, 2004, taking more than 1,000 students hostage and holding them for three days. More than 300 hostages were killed, including at least 180 children, when Russian special forces launched a military offensive to end the siege. Twenty years later, the concrete walls of the gymnasium at School No. 1, where the hostages were held, are covered with carved inscriptions commemorating the dead. Outside the gym, survivors of the siege and their families stood under the hot summer sun, holding aloft photos of their loved ones. Bells tolled.
