The death toll from severe flooding in Myanmar following Cyclone Yagi has doubled to 226, state media reported, as the UN warned as many as 630,000 people may need aid. Yagi swept across northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar more than a week ago with strong winds and heavy rain, triggering floods and landslides that have killed more than 500 people, according to official figures. State television in junta-ruled Myanmar confirmed 226 deaths on Monday night, with 77 people still missing, more than doubling the previous toll of 113. The television network also said that nearly 260,000 hectares of rice fields and other crops had been destroyed by the floods. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) disaster response agency said some 631,000 people were affected by floods that hit Myanmar. UNOCHA said food, drinking water, shelter and clothing were urgently needed, warning that disrupted communication lines, blocked roads and damaged bridges were severely hampering relief efforts. Poor communications, especially with remote areas, also meant that information about casualties was slow to come to light.
