In 2024 Assassination Attempt on Zelenskyy Thwarted in Poland

In 2024, an attempt was made to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Rzeszów Airport in Poland. However, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), together with Polish counterparts, successfully prevented the plot. SBU Chief Vasyl Maliuk revealed this during a meeting with journalists. According to Maliuk, the attack was planned by a military pensioner who was “a devoted believer in Soviet ideology.” He intended to strike Zelensky either with a drone or a sniper rifle. The would-be attacker was apprehended. This was not the only attempt on President Zelenskyy’s life. Maliuk also disclosed an incident in Kyiv that allegedly involved colonels from Ukraine’s State Guard Directorate (UDO) working for Russia’s FSB Fifth Service. According to Maliuk, these individuals were tasked with recruiting someone close to the president’s security team who could assassinate him during movement within the Presidential Office compound. The SBU spent nearly two years infiltrating the spy network. Besides Zelenskyy, the same group was also gathering intelligence and plotting assassinations targeting the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR), Kyrylo Budanov, and Maliuk himself.
