The European Union has officially adopted its 18th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, described as one of the toughest yet. “We stand firm. The EU has just approved one of the toughest sanctions packages against Russia to date,” said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas in a post on social media platform X. According to Kallas, the new measures further restrict Russia’s military budget. “We are tightening restrictions on the Kremlin’s military spending by targeting an additional 105 ships in the shadow fleet and their suppliers, limiting Russian banks’ access to financing, banning the Nord Stream pipelines, and lowering the oil price cap,” she stated. The package also targets Russia’s military-industrial complex, Chinese banks enabling sanctions evasion, and the export of drone-related technologies. “For the first time, the EU is including a shipping flag registry and Rosneft’s largest oil refinery in India in the sanctions list,” Kallas added. The sanctions also address individuals involved in the ideological indoctrination of Ukrainian children. “We will continue to raise the cost of this war, making an end to aggression the only viable path for Moscow,” the EU official concluded. Previously, the adoption of the 18th sanctions package had been delayed for weeks due to opposition from Slovakia. However, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico agreed yesterday to lift his objection, allowing final approval to proceed on July 18.
