The Verkhovna Rada has voted to appoint Yuliia Svyrydenko as the new Prime Minister of Ukraine. This was reported by Ukrinform, citing a Telegram post by MP Yaroslav Zhelezniak. A total of 262 members of parliament supported her appointment. With this vote, Yuliia Svyrydenko becomes the 19th Prime Minister of Ukraine and the second woman in the country’s history to hold this position. Svyrydenko was born on December 25, 1985, in Chernihiv. Since 2015, she has held various leadership roles in the Chernihiv Regional State Administration, including Head of the Department of Economic Development, First Deputy Head of the Administration, and Acting Head from July to December 2018. In 2019–2020, she served as Deputy and then First Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Trade, and Agriculture. On December 22, 2020, she was appointed Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine by presidential decree. On November 4, 2021, the Verkhovna Rada appointed her as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy. As previously reported by Ukrinform, on July 14 President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed that Svyrydenko lead the Cabinet of Ministers during a meeting with her in her capacity as First Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister. On July 16, the Verkhovna Rada accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. As a result, the entire Cabinet stepped down automatically. Shmyhal served as Prime Minister for five years (since March 4, 2020) — the longest term in the history of independent Ukraine. Also on July 16, during a closed meeting of the Servant of the People faction attended by the President and parliamentary leadership, candidates for the new Prime Minister and Cabinet members were presented.
