The U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Ukraine must receive firm and reliable security guarantees. Starmer joined Wednesday’s high-level talks with leaders from the United States, Ukraine, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Finland, NATO, and the European Union. “All leaders agreed that this week is a pivotal moment for Ukraine’s future. They thanked President Trump for his efforts to engage President Putin in talks in pursuit of ending the bloodshed,”— the Downing Street statement said. Starmer stressed: “Support for Ukraine is unwavering — international borders must not be changed by force, and Ukraine must have firm and reliable security guarantees to protect its territorial integrity as part of any agreement.” The British government emphasized that Europe is ready to support these efforts and will continue working with Presidents Trump and Zelenskyy for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. According to the statement, participants are looking forward to further discussions after the bilateral Trump–Putin meeting in Alaska on Friday. As reported, Trump and Putin will meet on August 15 in Alaska. Ahead of this meeting, EU leaders signed a statement in support of Ukraine — Hungary did not join. EU leaders stressed that the path to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine’s participation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, said European leaders had agreed with Trump on the principles for talks with Putin, stressing that all matters regarding Ukraine must be discussed only with Ukraine. Participants in the talks included Donald Trump, Ursula von der Leyen, Mark Rutte, Alexander Stubb, Emmanuel Macron, Giorgia Meloni, and Karol Nawrocki.
