“It Will Happen”: Trump Confident Zelenskyy–Putin Meeting Is Inevitable
U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin will take place. Speaking to reporters before departing for Scotland, Trump said: “It will happen. But it should’ve happened three months ago.” He repeated his certainty once again: “It will happen.” Trump also hinted that secondary sanctions against Russia may be imposed earlier than the 50-day deadline he previously announced. Background: During the recent talks in Istanbul, the Ukrainian side proposed holding a Zelenskyy–Putin meeting next month. Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry insists that a leaders’ summit is necessary to achieve real steps toward peace. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has cast doubt on whether such a meeting could be organized before the end of August.
