Japan has officially extended the Emergency Recovery and Reconstruction Project in Ukraine until the end of March 2027. The decision was made during the fifth session of the Joint Coordinating Committee for the project, which is supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), according to Ukraine’s Ministry for Communities and Territories Development. "This extension will expand the scope of assistance, improve long-term planning, and ensure sustainable implementation of critical initiatives," the ministry stated. The meeting focused on priority areas for further cooperation between Ukraine and Japan. Among the top projects: – Housing for internally displaced persons (IDPs) — including the creation of a municipal social housing fund, major repairs of apartment buildings, and procurement of modular housing.– Accessibility upgrades — installation of ramps, elevators, and lifts in social institutions under the "Barrier-Free Movement" initiative.– Continued supply of rails, bridge structures, and road inspection and repair equipment. Japan also expanded its debris recycling support program to cover the Zaporizhzhia, Chernihiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Kherson, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, and Luhansk regions. In addition, the parties discussed the scaling of pilot projects involving heat pumps, modular boiler plants, and cogeneration equipment for local communities. Earlier, Ukraine’s Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko and JICA Ukraine Office Head Hideki Matsunaga signed a loan agreement exceeding $3 billion, to be repaid using proceeds from frozen Russian assets.
