Defence Force women to host Wellness Football tourney from July 13-19

A TT youth high performance women's football team, as well as the Grenada women's team, will be among the teams to feature in the 3 W – Women Warriors Wellness Football invitational tournament from July 13-19 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo. The week-long tournament will be hosted by the Defence Force women's football team. On July 10, a Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) release said the "competition was initiated following discussions with the Grenada Football Association, Defence Force and the TTFA." In the six-team tourney, TT will be represented by a combined Under-17 and Under-20 team, which is expected to be overseen by Paul Decle. The tournament will have two groups, with the Grenadian women being joined by Defence Force and AC PoS in Group A, and the TT high performance team being joined by Club Sando and Queen's Park in Group B. Lt Khadija Lamy told Newsday how the tournament was conceptualised. "The Chief of Defence Staff (Air Vice Marshall Darryl Daniel) felt we needed more recognition for women in sport, but specifically women in football," Lamy said. "The president of the Grenada FA (Marlon Glean) reached out to the Chief of Defence Staff, and they agreed that (Grenada's) national team would become a part of it also." With last week's passage of Hurricane Beryl taking its toll on Caribbean countries such as St Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada, including the island of Carriacou, the nature of the tourney became two-fold. "During preparation for the tournament, Hurricane Beryl happened. Grenada is our Caribbean neighbour and became a part of this initiative with us," Lamy said. "We have invited our patrons to bring relief items. There's a whole play area for the kids and we expect to have giveaways and whatnot on match days. "We're not charging an entrance fee, but we would really like patrons to come and bring the relief items you can so we can help support our Caricom sister isle." On July 13, the tournament will kick off with a 5.10 pm fixture between Grenada and Defence Force. From 7.30 pm, TT's high performance team will tackle Club Sando in the second game of a double-header. After group play concludes on July 16, the top two teams in both groups will advance to the semis, with the respective winners advancing to the July 19 final. The TTFA release said Grenada's Under-18 girls' team will also engage in friendly matches against TT's Under-15 girls' high performance team, Pleasantville Secondary and local youth club Pro Series.
