Support extended by the EU is sincerely appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said July 3. The MOFA’s response followed a statement released after the 13th EU-China Strategic Dialogue took place July 2 in Brussels. The event was co-chaired by Kaja Kallas, high representative for foreign affairs and security policy and vice-president of the European Commission. According to the statement, Kallas expressed opposition to any unilateral attempts to alter the cross-strait status quo, including by force or coercion. She also expressed concerns about human rights in China, as well as hybrid threats in Europe coming from Beijing. The MOFA noted that the EU’s European External Action Service also made announcements in response to three large-scale military exercises carried out by China since last May, adding that the releases stressed the strategic importance of cross-strait peace and stability, which is key to regional and global security and prosperity, and stated that the EU has a direct interest in maintaining the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. The statement and announcements demonstrate the EU’s close attention to the cross-strait situation, the MOFA said. The ministry added that it will continue to strengthen cooperation with the EU and other like-minded partners to safeguard freedom and democracy, defend the rules-based international order and ensure cross-strait and Indo-Pacific peace and stability.
