Marine fungi, thriving in ocean environments, account for 5% of total ocean biomass but most are microscopic. Researchers have limited understanding of their diversity and importance. There are species unique to marine environments and others that could be from land. Evolving adaptations, they cope with varying resources in challenging marine habitats, sometimes developing new forms.
