Beyond the Headlines - Juneteenth

I don't pay attention to most holidays in other countries, but there is on that uplifts my spirit south of the border today. Today is June 19th, the federally-recognized holiday known as Juneteenth, which is recognized each year to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. It's date on the calendar is a distant echo of June 19, 1865, the day when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas. The proclamation itself was delivered on September 22, 1862, by President Abraham Lincoln, but it's enforcement would wait in the "lone star" state until the war was over, a day that Lincoln himself...
