There are still a few hundred people without power after the severe thunderstorm that hit parts of Ontario Thursday night. Bianca Teixeira, media relations with Hydro One, says crews are continuing to assess the damage. "We understand how difficult it is to be without which is why this morning with outages throughout the province it's all hands on deck," she says. Teixeira recommends keeping a close eye on Hydro One's outage map. She says it's updated every 10 minutes and includes an estimated restoration time. "With all the strong wind and heavy rain overnight, it knocked down trees and branches onto the lines which, in turn, could break the poles," continues Teixeira. She says the damaged poles and fallen power lines will be fixed throughout the day. Teixeira asks everyone to give workers plenty of space. "Give them a wave, let them know you appreciate what they're doing, but stay away," she says. If you spot a downed line or pole, she says to call 1-800-434-1235 or text 92887 with information about what you're seeing. Teixeira adds to always stay as far away from damaged poles or lines as possible. In preparation for future outages, she suggests creating an emergency preparedness kit and leaving it in an easy-to-find spot. Teixeira says to include essential items like water, cash, non-perishable food, blankets, and a battery-powered radio. Also, if you have pets, she adds to keep food for them on hand. She also says to make sure your important devices, like your phone, are charged. "I, personally, have a really bad habit of letting my phone completely die before I recharge it," she says.
