The Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) project, which will be the new link between Johor Bahru and Singapore, has been officially unveiled to the public. The launch ceremony was held at the Singapore Rail Test Centre, SRTC and was officiated by the Minister of Transport of Malaysia, YB Loke Siew Fook; the Minister of Transport of Singapore, Mr Jeffrey Siow; and the Menteri Besar of Johor, YAB Dato’ Onn Hafiz bin Ghazi. The train consists of four carriages and is capable of carrying more than 600 passengers at a time. The RTS Link project is a commuter train system with a total distance of 4km, which includes 2.7km in Malaysia and 1.3km in Singapore. It will connect two main stations, namely Bukit Chagar Station in Johor Bahru and RTS Link Station in Woodlands North, Singapore. In terms of performance, this train is capable of reaching a maximum operating speed of 80km/h. When fully operational, the system is expected to handle 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction, averaging around 40,000 passengers per day. One of the highlights of this project is the implementation of a user-friendly Immigration, Customs and Quarantine (ICQ/CIQ) system. Both countries will house their respective border control facilities in the same building at each station. This will allow all immigration and customs processes to be completed at the departure station only, and upon arrival at the destination, passengers will no longer have to undergo any border checks. For your information, this project has been under construction since 2021 and is expected to be completed and fully operational by the end of December 2026.
