Leading airline Emirates will ban the use of powerbanks in the aircraft cabin starting October 1, 2025. Starting on that date, passengers will only be allowed to carry one powerbank with a capacity of less than 100Wh (~27,027 mAh) and it cannot be used to charge devices or be charged using the aircraft's power plug.Powerbanks can no longer be placed in the overhead compartment, but must instead be placed under the seat or in a seat pocket. They must also clearly display the capacity information for inspection. The measure was taken after a fire involving a lithium-ion battery on Air Busan Flight 391 in South Korea in January that destroyed the Airbus A321. Although the cause of the fire is still under investigation, it is suspected that a powerbank or vape in the overhead compartment caught fire. In South Korea, the measure taken by Emirates has been in effect since February.
