MCMC Strengthens Control of Harmful Content Involving Children

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) views the issue of harmful content involving children on social media platforms seriously. According to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, a total of 1,443 pieces of related content have been taken down by service providers as of mid-July, following violations of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) and the platforms’ community guidelines.Fahmi explained that MCMC has been conducting ongoing engagement sessions with platform providers such as YouTube and TikTok. This effort aims to ensure that platform algorithms are more transparent and in line with local regulations, including limiting exposure to negative or harmful content. He also stressed that internet and social media service providers that meet licensing requirements are required to apply for an Application Service Provider Class Licence to ensure that content regulation and algorithm management are carried out responsibly. As a complement, the MCMC Code of Conduct also requires the implementation of important security features including age verification, parental controls, security functions and periodic content audits.Fahmi also announced that the Safe Internet campaign will be expanded through various engagement initiatives and strategic collaborations with various parties, including student representatives from public universities.
