The Swedish government has approved a contribution of 20 million SEK (approximately 2.1 million USD) to support the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) missions focused on nuclear safety in Ukraine in 2025. This was announced on the official website of the Swedish government, according to Ukrinform. “The IAEA’s work is crucial for the safety of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants. This is why the Government has decided to provide additional support so that the IAEA can maintain its presence in Ukraine,” says Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard. The funding will mainly support the deployment of IAEA experts at Ukrainian nuclear facilities, including the Chernobyl site. “The support helps reduce the risk of armed attacks, provide professional advice on nuclear safety and nuclear protective security and ensure impartial and independent international reporting,” the government’s press release stated. It is noted that the IAEA’s technical support to Ukraine on nuclear safety and nuclear protective security totals approximately EUR 75 million a year. As reported earlier, Sweden has also pledged 1.5 billion SEK (over USD 150 million) for new military support to Ukraine, including barrels for Archer self-propelled artillery systems and other defense equipment.
