Ukraine stresses that a ceasefire must come first to enable any diplomatic progress, as Russia launched its third strike on Ukrainian cities following the meeting of European leaders with US President Donald Trump in Washington. “These attacks show that Russia has no intention to stop its armed aggression. Unless the killings end, it is very difficult to open the path to diplomacy,”— Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Maryana Betsa. Betsa made the remarks at the Fourth International Forum of the Crimean Platform Expert Network, noting that Russia continues to blatantly ignore all international peace efforts. The latest strikes killed 12 people in Kyiv, including three children, and heavily damaged the EU Delegation building. On August 18, Ukrainian and US presidents met at the White House, followed by a broader session with European leaders, including: Ursula von der Leyen (EU Commission President) Mark Rutte (NATO Secretary General) Friedrich Merz (Germany, Chancellor) Giorgia Meloni (Italy, PM) Emmanuel Macron (France, President) Alexander Stubb (Finland, President) Keir Starmer (UK, PM) “Russia continues to disregard peace efforts, making a ceasefire the essential first step,” Betsa concluded.
