Premier Cho reaffirms commitment to secure future

Premier Cho Jung-tai July 2 called on all members of society to work together to maintain social stability, personal safety and property security in Taiwan.   The premier made the remarks at the opening of a free exhibition aimed at educating the public about air-raid shelters and basic emergency protection skills that is underway till July 30 at Taipei MRT’s Ximen Station.   According to the Executive Yuan, the exhibition is organized by the National Police Agency to raise awareness of disaster preparedness ahead of nationwide air raid drills scheduled for July 15-17 as part of the Urban Resilience Exercise. The event showcases government initiatives aimed at enhancing homeland resilience and security, including measures to protect key infrastructure and public shelters from disaster.   Cho said in addition to persistent military threats from China, natural and man-made disasters also pose a threat to safety and everyday life, adding that it is imperative for all members of the public to work in unity to enhance disaster preparedness.   The premier said July was designated by President Lai Ching-te as the national unity month to encourage citizens to contribute to the national security network. A number of local resilience exercises were held in eight cities and counties in early April this year, while the annual Han Kuang exercises, Taiwan’s largest-scale annual military drills, will take place July 9-18.   In terms of enhancing economic resilience, Cho said after the U.S. announced new tariff policies on April 3, within 48 hours the Cabinet rolled out an initiative to support local export businesses. It has also earmarked a special budget of NT$410 billion (US$14.13 billion) to strengthen the country’s economic, social and homeland resilience, Cho said, expressing hope that the bill will be passed by the Legislative Yuan imminently.
