Electronic health records symposium held by MOHW

The Ministry of Health and Welfare held a symposium Aug. 13 in Taipei City to spotlight Taiwan’s achievements in the use of systematized clinical language to enhance public health.   The symposium and workshops on SNOMED CT, which stands for Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine - Clinical Terms, involved academia, experts, health professionals, public and private sector representatives to share best practices.   Since its Digital Health Platform initiative was launched in 2024, the MOHW has worked with many local medical institutions to adopt global standards, such as Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources and Clinical Quality Language, to manage electronic health records. The ministry expects the symposium to help the local medical community better understand global trends.   Deputy MOHW Minister Lue Jen-der said the ministry is working to enhance professional training and governance practices to help Taiwan’s health facilities adopt SNOMED CT. The symposium is an opportunity to extend cross-border exchanges and bring the country further in line with global standards, he added.   The one-day event began with a presentation on the roadmap to SNOMED CT implementation by Lee Chien-chang, director-general of the MOHW Department of Information Management.   It also featured two speeches from experts of London-based SNOMED International, one panel discussion and four workshops on topics spanning the value of common clinical language for health and the use of SNOMED CT in AI and health data analytics, as well current progress at Taiwan’s medical institutions.
