Taiwan steps up AI applications in transportation

The inaugural meeting of a transportation artificial intelligence promotion committee was convened by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications Aug. 5, highlighting government commitment to increase AI applications in transportation management.   Hosted by MOTC Minister Chen Shih-kai, the event was attended by academics, officials from the MOTC and the Ministry of Finance. The topics spanned AI employment, cyber security legislation and smart management.   According to Chen, AI is key to promoting digital transformation and innovative services in transportation. It can improve service efficiency, promote traffic safety and strengthen transportation systems’ resilience to achieve sustainable development, he said. He added that the MOTC will continue to implement human-centered measures to construct an AI development blueprint and governance structure for transportation transition.   The Department of Technology and Information for Transportation first elaborated on the committee’s missions and 7 strategies, including offering smart services for the public, creating an AI-facilitated environment, cultivating diverse AI personnel and setting up automated administrative services. The department added that it has proposed 19 projects for the smart services strategy and 15 plans for the automated administrative services strategy.   The Department of Public Transportation and Supervision then reported progress in adjusting regulations for self-driving vehicles; and the Central Weather Administration shared its experience in AI applications for weather forecast and disaster response.   The MOTC said the ministry is further drafting internal AI implementation regulations in line with the Executive Yuan’s AI Basic Act that is currently still in the pipeline. It will work with other ministries and agencies through the committee to create a smarter, safer and more sustainable transportation future for all, the ministry added.
