The National Science and Technology Council and Ministry of Economic Affairs held a joint event July 4 in the southern city of Tainan to showcase progress in promoting artificial intelligence innovation and smart applications through the Taiwan Smart System Integration and Manufacturing Platform. As part of the policy goal to build Taiwan’s capabilities as a “smart island,” the NSTC implemented the Greater Southern New Silicon Valley Promotion Plan and set up the platform in collaboration with the MOEA. The event unveiled more than 40 innovations in smart manufacturing, health care, and services developed under the initiative, and spotlighted what AI technologies can bring to everyday life. During his opening remarks, NSTC Minister Wu Cheng-wen called the platform a major initiative for AI system development. He welcomed academic and research institutes to join the initiative as supply chain partners. The platform also serves as a talent cultivation hub to fast-track development of a complete AI industry ecosystem in Taiwan, he added. Under the New Silicon Valley promotion plan, the government will inject more than NT$36 billion (US$1.2 billion) between 2025 and 2029 into projects to enhance the country’s computational capabilities, attract talent and develop related applications. The end goal is to see the S-shaped semioconductor corridor from Chiayi to Pingtung counties, along with the Shalun Smart Green Energy Science City, transformed into an AI cluster in southern Taiwan. According to the NSTC, the platform focuses on analyzing the needs of the industry sector and promoting independent system design capabilities. It has more than 70 partner entities in the local semiconductor and AI sectors. (SFC-E) Write to Taiwan Today at ttonline@mofa.gov.tw
