Kingston FURY Renegade PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD – Hardware Review

It’s only been a few weeks since we took a closer look at Kioxia’s EXCERIA PRO – NVME, which proved to offer great value for a fair price. We are by no means experts that delve into every tiny aspect of these nifty little drives, and thus we often focus on the main specs and keep hardware reviews like this short and simple. Today, we already have another similar device on offer, Kingston’s FURY Renegade PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD. The device comes with or without heatsink, and it’s also PS5-ready. We’ve been working with the 2TB drive for roughly a month now, and we were quite impressed with the overall performance. If you want to delve into the nitty and gritty of the specs, we recommend checking out the official product page by clicking here. Here you might also find what model suits you best, and if you should opt for a device with or without a heatsink. You can basically never go wrong with the latter, and for PS5 players this is also a must. Of course, you can also buy your own heatsink, but it’s always easier to have a preprepared drive that also has the right measurements. Installing the drive into a PS5 console is actually quite simple. We suggest following the steps on Sony’s official site, and perhaps even opening a YouTube tutorial when you’re in doubt. When you have successfully inserted and secured the FURY Renegade PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD, your console will also ask to format the drive, and you’ll be presented with the current read speed. You’ll notice that the drive’s writing speed performance is better than Sony’s original drive. We reckon this has to do with the original drive prioritizing read speed over write speed, however. We were also curious to see how well the drive performed in our desktop setup due to the limited availability of actual performance tools for Sony’s PS5. The installation process was quite easy, as it’s often a matter of using the correct spacer and properly clicking the drive into place (and of course tightening the spacer screw). After this, we ran into a bit of trouble, as the drive wasn’t immediately recognized on our system. This eventually turned out to be a Windows issue, where we simply had to find a small workaround to get up and running. All that said and done, we were not disappointed and made the FURY Renegade our go-to gaming drive. We tried the overall performance with CrystalDiskMark for this test and always had pretty consistent results. It’s impressive to see how the technology evolved in only a matter of years, especially when looking at Seagate’s FireCuda 510 SSD M.2, which was an impressive gaming M.2 SSD back in 2019. Conclusion Kingston’s FURY Renegade PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD with a heatsink is probably one of the best options available on the market for PS5 gamers. The drive performs better than Sony’s internal hardware, and with different available capacities, you’re certain to find the drive that suits your needs. As a PC gaming M.2 SSD, Kingston’s drive also puts down an impressive performance. In our current gaming rig, the FURY Renegade PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD has now been promoted to our main drive to play games from.
