As far as Survivors-like games go, we really enjoyed playing through Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Hel in 2025. The game proved to be a worthy addition to the genre, and the almost Diablo-like visuals were what truly set it apart from many of the more basic-looking titles in the Survivors-like library. Sadly, we found the content perhaps a bit too limited and considered the game to be a bit more bite-sized than, for example, Nordic Ashes or Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor. That seems to be changing now, with the game’s first DLC that revolves around the iconic Conan the Barbarian. We loved revisiting Jotunnslayer for this short DLC review. The new content adds Conan as a new selectable hero and Stygia, which comes straight from the Conan universe, as the new playable map. Conan is a melee-based hero, and most of his standard attacks are short or mid-ranged abilities. Conan will wildly swing his sword around him, but he also has an intimidating shout, spinning blades, and a bouncing shield to spice things up. His main passive abilities work with ‘triumphs,’ which stack after certain conditions are met. Each triumph will negate an incoming blow, making Conan a bit tankier than some other heroes. We loved the new hero and found ourselves playing level after level with him, to see how he would play on higher difficulties after being fully upgraded. The new Stygia level was also a nice new addition, as the map has two zones you can play in, namely the desert-like surface and the small tomb underneath. The boss fight at the end follows the same ‘vibe’ as the other boss battles and proved to be entertaining enough. Alongside the DLC release, some other new additions have been added to the game, such as the new God of Fate, which mainly provides players with passive upgrades during a run, and the local co-op feature. The latter is rather fun and well thought-out. Each player can still select a character they want to play, but the number of active skills has been reduced per character, and each player levels up in alternating order. This reduces the time players have to choose their new skills and keeps the flow almost identical to a single-player run. Conclusion Even though the Conan expansion proved to be a lot of fun, there isn’t that much content to come back for. Of course, leveling up Conan and playing through the new level was entertaining, but we still hoped for a bit more. Luckily, the free update for local co-op and the new ‘God of Fate’ also adds more incentive to come back to Jotunnslayer. If you’re someone who still boots up the game regularly to unwind, we can easily say that the Conan DLC is very much worth it. If you feel like the game has shown you all its secrets, we might suggest waiting for a sale, as the price of entry for the DLC is almost the same as what some full games in the genre cost. Nonetheless, the new content was fun, albeit limited.
