Even though the release of PowerWash Simulator 2 will have cleaning simulator fans quite occupied for a while to come, there are still quite a few other titles that try to create something rather original in this specific niche. In comes Goblin Cleanup, a title that’s also about cleaning, albeit in a fantasy setting. The game shows us what happens behind the scenes when adventurers clear a dungeon, and it needs to be reset for the next group. In this Early Access version of Goblin Cleanup, we play as productive goblins cleaning up dungeons. While there were still some rough edges present, we quite enjoyed what this original project had to offer. Goblin Cleanup comes without an actual story in the current build, but that’s okay, as it’s all about cleaning up dungeons anyway. You’ll go from one stage to the next, be it solo or with up to three other players, to clean up the mess that the adventurers left in their wake. The presentation reminded us a bit of older World of Warcraft graphics, and everything looked rather vibrant and cute when it came to character models. The dungeons themselves are a bit more bleak, which suits the overall premise of the game. The sound design isn’t too bad either, but when you’re playing with friends, we reckon the music is turned down. Your goal in the game is simple: reset dungeons so that the next group of adventurers can clear them. This is done by cleaning up blood stains, fixing items, replenishing objects with magic, and even pulling off a few other objectives or two while you’re at it. It’s a simple concept, but it does come with its own set of challenges. Whereas titles such as PowerWash Simulator focus on a more zen-like experience, Goblin Cleanup still requires you to pay attention. There are nasty traps in the dungeon, Mimic chests may gobble you up (possibly due to other goblins giving you the old accidental push), and even platforming segments may cause your untimely demise. To make matters worse, when you perish, you might even have to clean up your own remains when you respawn. We found that the game is best enjoyed with a full cleaning crew of four players. You’ll get objectives done so much quicker, and when communicating properly, you’ll pull off harder segments easier as well. Cleaning up dungeons on your own can prove to be a bit of a daunting task and will take you quite a long time to do so. While still fun to play on your own, Goblin Cleanup shines as a multiplayer experience first and foremost. Completing all objectives in a mission can prove to be tricky, especially for certain ones that leave no room for mistakes. Things get even trickier when you’re being hit due to unclear hitboxes on Mimics or certain traps. Clearing objectives and just general tasks reward you with experience, tickets, and golden slimes. Experience will grant you general progression, while the tickets allow you to purchase cosmetics in the store. Golden slimes are needed to unlock more levels, but also for certain cosmetics in the store. Not all levels are currently available in the Early Access version, but there is already quite a bit of content to keep you occupied for a few hours. Conclusion Goblin Cleanup is a very amusing cleaning ‘simulator’ with a multiplayer focus. Even in its Early Access state, it offers fun gameplay mechanics, an already polished experience, and quite a bit of content. The levels on offer are quite long, and when you’re able to play the game with friends, you’re sure to have a blast. While there is some content currently not available yet, and smaller issues with hitboxes still need to be sorted, there is already a lot to enjoy here. If you’re a fan of similar titles and are looking for a title that can be played with more people, then it’s more than worth looking into Goblin Cleanup.
