Keys of Fury: Typing Action – Review

Games where typing is not just a gimmick but the main gameplay mechanic have been around for quite some time. Typing of the Dead was probably the first major title to employ this mechanic for its action-packed gameplay. Instead of aiming and pointing a gun, you had to type words that appeared on the screen to rid yourself of encroaching hordes of zombies. Recently, another title, Blood Typers, also used typing as its shtick, but instead of just combat, it was also employed to move around a 3D environment to slay the undead. Today, however, we ditch the zombies for kung-fu moves with Keys of Fury: Typing Action, where you’ll punch your enemies into submission by typing words or sentences. While perhaps a bit basic and lacking in content, we still quite enjoyed ourselves. Story While Keys of Fury does have a bit of a storyline currently present, it’s not finished yet, as some content is still missing. We found this to be odd, as the game is not an Early Access title. That being said, you’ll be playing as Tai Ping, who gets herself into a pickle while traveling, and she soon finds herself doing odd jobs in order to achieve her goal(s). The story itself is presented in funny and quirky ways, with the silly dialogues being the standout feature here. Graphics Keys of Fury’s old-school pixelated visuals pack a lot of charm. While the overall visuals are a bit limited when it comes to different backdrops and enemies in many of the game’s modes, the animations in general look very polished and fluid. There is still some enemy variety, and there are still a few different sceneries, but these tend to repeat quite often when playing the different modes of the game. A few modes do offer some original settings, such as the mode where you race against dinosaurs. All in all, everything looks really smooth, and performance is buttery smooth as a result. Sound The sound design of Keys of Fury is great. The soundtrack is fairly expansive, and the upbeat music really gets you in the mood to kick the butts of the many foes that have it out for you. You can even ‘buy’ the in-game tracks with the currency you collect while playing, if you simply want to listen to your favorite tunes. The sound effects are also nicely done, even though these mainly consist of your typing noise that also doubles as Tai Ping’s punching and kicking noises. Gameplay Keys of Fury: Typing Action is an action title where typing the on-screen words or phrases is your means of disposing of your enemies. Making mistakes will cost you HP or slow you down in some of the other modes. Make too many mistakes, and you’ll meet your untimely demise, and you’ll have to retry the level or restart from the last checkpoint. The game is really straightforward, and actually doesn’t have that much content. The story mode is currently still unfinished, and all the other additional modes are also rather short. No matter what mode you pick, the objective is always the same: type words or short sentences correctly. In some cases, you’ll simply type words, and things gradually ramp up in terms of difficulty, while at other times you can type sentences at a fairly relaxed pace. It’s sometimes best not to rush things to prevent mistakes. After playing for a while, you’ll earn gold, which you can spend on upgrades, such as filling up your fury meter quicker or defeating multiple enemies in a row when triggering your fury. Other than that, you can also buy cosmetics and in-game music. We did encounter one major annoyance, though, as we lost all progress after playing the endless mode for roughly an hour and a half. We were quite happy with the money we were earning, but sadly, we had real-life obligations, and hence, we had to exit. Exiting the endless mode does not give you any warning about lost progress, so we assumed we could just exit and receive our hard-earned cash. Instead, we were sent to the main menu, without any of the gold we earned to purchase upgrades. This pretty much turned our positive experience into something rather negative. Conclusion Keys of Fury: Typing Action is a simple but amusing action title that works well with the typing mechanics. The game offers fast-paced action, a few quirky modes, and a great audiovisual presentation. Sadly, there currently isn’t that much content present, which does significantly reduce the fun to be had here. Even so, if you’re looking for something different and you enjoy typing, then this one is certainly worth checking out. At the time of writing this review, the in-game menu states that new content will be added in February 2026.
