LASUTH PHARMACY DEPARTMENT MARKS WORLD PHARMACY DAY 2025

Members of the  Pharmacy Department of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH)  joined their counterparts all over the world to commemorate the 2025 World Pharmacy Day on Wednesday, 24th  September, 2025. The theme of the day  is ‘’Think Health, Think Pharmacists". The departmental activities were commenced with a courtesy visit to the hospital management, after which a health- awareness walk and  health talks round the hospital clinics were conducted. The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Adetokunbo. O Fabamwo while receiving the team appreciated the pharmacy department saying the department is critical to the hospital and the hospital management appreciates its services.  He said the management is very happy to see that all critical clinics are  serviced by staff in the hospital’s pharmacy department. The CMD  charged them to commit themselves more passionately to work.The Head of the Department Pharm. Dr. Patricia Titilola Odunuga who spoke on the significance of the theme said it identifies the important roles pharmacists play in all health outcomes. She noted that the role of a pharmacist is important because "when diagnoses  are made,  the next important step is the dispenation of the medications  prescibed for the patient. Dr.  Odunuga noted that dispensation of the medications is as important as making sure patients take their medications as they are supposed to.The program then proceeded to the opening ceremony where notable speakers and professionals in the department were present to give keynote addresses and also to speak more on the importance and significance of the celebrations.The Chief Medical Director, Professor. Adetokunbo. O Fabamwo, who was represented by the Deputy Director Clinical Services and Training (Clinical 1), Dr. Bamidele Ayodele, spoke on the theme. He said it is very important that when  health care is brought to fore, the job of the pharmacists which includes dispensing medications, cannot be underrated. He further noted that pharmacists play bigger roles in sustaining healthcare.  Dr. Ayodele then appreciated the department and also assured them of the  management's support to be able to meet the mandate of being a partner and champion in healthcare. In her welcome address the Head of Department,Pharm Dr. Patricia Odunuga said pharmacists are some of  the most accessible members in the healthcare system and they are more than just dispensers of medications, they ensure the availability and appropriate use of medicines,deliver vaccinations and preventive care,support public health campaigns,promote rational antibiotics use,improve health literacy and serve as a trusted point of contacts for millions specially in underserved communities. She also appreciated the CMD for increasing the  number of interns who are being trained through rotation in all the pharmacy units inside the hospital.Hon. Idowu Obasa who was the chairman of the event,represented by Dr. Olatunji Koolchap in his remark said pharmacist are not just dispensers of medicines but frontline healthcare providers, patients advocates, policy influencers and innovators working to ensure safe, effective and accessible healthcare for all. The keynote speaker Dr. Lolu Ojo in his address spoke on the theme saying the role  amoung other things, encouraged younger pharmacists to always have control over themselves, become vastly skilled and have self awareness wherever they go.Awards were given to outstanding staff who participated in the games organised by the department.  The celebrations were concluded with a novelty match between the male members of staff at the pharmacy department and the LASUTH male football team.  It ended in a 1-0 score line, in favour of the LASUTH male football team.
