Tourism in Bhutan began in the 1970s with government-led initiatives and was later privatised in 1991. The “high value, low volume” policy introduced by His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo and further nurtured by His Majesty The King has effectively shielded the nation from the negative impacts of mass tourism while generating significant revenue.
