The Warri Urhobo National Congress (WUNC) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of renowned statesman, legal luminary, and Niger Delta rights advocate, Pa. Edwin Kiagbodo Clarke. His demise is a significant loss not only to the Warri Urhobo people but to the entire Niger Delta and Nigeria as a whole.Pa. Clarke was a towering figure in the fight for equity, justice, and resource control in the oil-rich Niger Delta. His relentless advocacy for true federalism and the rights of his people earned him national and international recognition as a respected elder statesman. In a statement signed by WUNC National President, Chief (Dr.) Westham Adehor, JP, and National Secretary, Olorogun Victor Okumagba, JP, the organization described Pa. Clarke as a “leader par excellence, a fearless fighter, and a walking encyclopedia of history.” His ability to recall historical events with accuracy made him a distinguished authority on Nigerian governance and history. The WUNC leadership recalled their last moments with Pa. Clarke during a recent gathering in Abuja, where he passionately discussed his forthcoming book, The Ownership of Warri, scheduled for release in June 2025. The book was expected to provide deeper insights into the historical and cultural dynamics of Warri’s land ownership. Sadly, fate intervened before its publication.Born into an era where activism was a necessity, Pa. Clarke dedicated his life to advocating for the development of the Niger Delta and the unity of Nigeria. As a lawyer and educationist, he championed constitutional reforms aimed at granting oil-producing communities greater control over their resources, a stance that won him widespread admiration. His unwavering commitment to peace, development, and justice saw him play key roles in negotiations and policy dialogues that shaped the region’s future. His wisdom and guidance on Warri Urhobo and Niger Delta affairs will be deeply missed. As the nation mourns this irreplaceable icon, WUNC extends its heartfelt condolences to Pa. Clarke’s family, the Ijaw nation, the people of the Niger Delta, and the Delta State Government. His departure leaves a void that may never be filled, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations."May the Lord grant him eternal rest," WUNC prayed, affirming that while an eagle has fallen, his legacy will forever soar in history.
