Discipline, pathway to greater Nigeria – NYSC Southwest Director

The Director of the NYSC Southwest Area Office 1, Mrs. Olubukola Oluwaremilekun Abiodun, has emphasized that the discipline of corps members during and after their service year is crucial to building a better and greater Nigeria.Speaking at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State, Abiodun addressed the 2024 Batch 'C' (Stream II) corps members deployed to Ondo State, including those temporarily relocated from Lagos. She encouraged them to uphold integrity, work hard, and avoid shortcuts to success, affirming that their potential for greatness lies within them."My dear children, I urge you to acquire skills under the NYSC’s Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme. In today’s world, relying on a single source of income can lead to challenges. I want you to live comfortably and happily, so embrace SAED for a brighter future," she advised.As a pioneer of the SAED initiative, which began in March 2012, Abiodun urged corps members to fully participate in both the in-camp and post-camp training, stressing that self-reliance and skill development are essential for future success.She also encouraged them to respect the customs and traditions of their host communities, particularly emphasizing the Yoruba culture's deep regard for respect. "If you show humility and respect to your hosts, they will support you in every way possible. Remember, respect is reciprocal," she noted.Highlighting the essence of NYSC in fostering national unity, she reminded the corps members of their role in promoting peace and understanding across ethnic and religious lines. "You have been brought together to appreciate Nigeria’s diversity and strengthen our unity as one nation," she added.On security, Abiodun advised corps members to prioritize their safety, assuring them that NYSC has implemented measures to protect them throughout the service year. She warned against using social media irresponsibly to criticize the scheme, reminding them that ignorance of the law is no excuse.Furthermore, she cautioned against unnecessary travel, especially at night, stressing that the NYSC values their lives and will take every necessary step to ensure their well-being.In her welcome address, the Ondo State Coordinator, Mrs. Kuburat Omowumi Bakare, commended the corps members for adjusting well to the regimented camp environment. She also assured them that the state NYSC management had settled outstanding electricity bills with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and ensured an adequate water supply for the camp community.The event concluded with a vibrant cultural display by corps members, after which the Director, affectionately called ‘Mama Area,’ demonstrated her generosity by giving cash gifts to the participants.
